Tile can be a great addition to a home. Tile is very strong and dense and can stand up to years of use with very little or no signs of wear. Glazed tile is completely waterproof which makes it suitable for areas of the home that are exposed to high levels of moisture like bathrooms, kitchens, and basements. The beauty of tile is that it is not only a highly functioning floor, but it is also extremely diverse in its design possibilities. These are the different options available when installing tile:

Color and Material

Tile is available in various materials. The most common type of tile is made from ceramic, but they can also be made of porcelain and natural stone. Most tiles have a glazed surface that both seals the tile from being penetrated by water and gives it a new color. Glazed tiles can be a solid color or can have interesting patterns, or you can have unglazed tiles that show the natural color of the tile’s material.

Modular Size

Tiles are typically square and equivalent in size for a nice uniform appearance or you can have tiles in various shapes in sizes that provide a more interesting look. Using modular shapes and sizes may be unconventional but it provides a unique pattern for your floor that will make your floor stand out.

Patterns

The vast variety of tile allows it to be installed in a world of different designs. Tile floors are most often arranged perfectly aligned with each other in rows and columns, which gives a uniform appearance. Tiles can be all the same color or they can be varying, much like a checkerboard. Other common patterns that are more interesting are staggered brick patterns, “random” modular size patters, and diagonal or “diamond” patterns.
